Family & Sexual Violence Conference 2023 - Speaker - Program & Presentation

In June 2023 Women’s Legal Services Tasmania invited Jen Wiedman to provide a breakout session at the Safe Equal Respected Family Violence Conference. Jen’s specialist practice experience in family violence and wellbeing in private practice was a welcomed addition to the program & came highly recommended by family violence service providers. Jen’s presentation was grounded in best practice, research & also from a deep understanding about women’s lived experience.

Jen’s session was not merely a provision of information but she also demonstrated that she lives and practices what she teaches. Jen respectfully acknowledged the original owners of the land, and provided a clear articulation of the purpose of the session and learning outcomes. There are many trainings regarding vicarious trauma and burnout, but what Jen generously shared with the audience were the key elements for working therapeutically with women (through a gendered lens) who experience trauma and family violence, the importance of self care and mechanisms for burnout prevention specific to working with family violence.

Jen connected this directly to the professional & ethical responsibility practitioners have to the women they work with to ensure safe, empathic & ethical practice.

Jen acknowledged the challenges of the work, in a genuine authentic way and this validation was empowering for the audience to hear, when often the expectation is that practitioners need to struggle through at any cost. Thank you Jen.
